Getting to London

Most rail services offer First and Standard Class accommodation. Many long-distance and inter-city services have a buffet car or at-seat trolley service for drinks and snacks. Always be sure to be on board your train a couple of minutes before the scheduled departure time as many trains have automatic doors that shut 40 seconds before departure.

All of the major stations have direct Tube links (with the ex Fenchurch Street, close to Tower Hill and Aldgate Tube stations). London's larger stations include shops where you can pick up a bite to eat, a drink and something to read on your journey. A chemist is also standard. Some stations even boast retail outlets selling clothes, gifts, and much more!

Driving Licences and Insurance
It is legal to drive in Britain with a valid driving licence from outside the UK for up to 12 months from the time of arrival.
Before arriving it is essential to ensure that you are adequately insured and that your vehicle is roadworthy.

Getting to London via Motorways
London is easy to reach using the UK's motorway network - with the M1, M2, M3, M4, M11, M20, M23, M25 and M40 motorways in or near London - as well as a multitude of major A-roads. All of London's motorways intersect the M25 orbital motorway. There are good road connections with London's airports and relevant ports.

Car Hire
The points of arrival are also well served by car hire companies and you can book in advance with companies like Holiday Autos. Always use a reputable car hire company.

Walking is a fantastic and environmentally-friendly way to get around London. You can beat the traffic while getting some exercise and taking in the view.

Travelling within Central London on foot can even save time, as many landmark locations are closer to each other than you might think. Ever changed lines to get the Tube between Covent Garden and Leicester Square? Actually they're only 5 minutes walk apart!

The Mayor of London is committed to making the city one of the most walking-friendly cities in the world and plans are already underway to improve the pedestrian environment. These plans include improving the accessibility of London's streets and facilities to people with special needs and restricted mobility.
